Today Michael Jackson would've been 52 years old. Although it's been a little over a year, thinking about his passing still closes up my throat. A musical genius, a remarkable dancer, a phenomenal entertainer and most of all The GREATEST entertainer HANDS DOWN. He was an inspiration to me and a doorway for every little girl and boy who ever wanted to be a STAR.

There's not a day that goes by where i don't listen to an MJ song. I loved him like i knew him... Actually, i did know him. Michael put his heart out there for the world to push, poke, and prod since he was 8 years old.

He gave us music to dance to and taught us moves, that in our bedrooms, we were CONVINCED we could do. I remember having his sparkly glove that i would fold up and tuck away under all my clothes in a drawer because it only came out when i was putting on a show. I knew i was never really much of a dancer so i focused on the singing and i had that down PACT! Man i was ready at any moment to bust out:

"I'LL BE THHH-YERRREEEEEE! OH iiIILLLLL BE THHHEEE-YEEERREEEE YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH! JUST CALL MY NA-A-A-A-ME, AND I'LL BE THERE!"

And Forget about Billy jean! Those alternating light up side walk blocks AMAZED ME! Shoot i was doing the "hee hee" grabbing my little crotch up and down the halls of my apartment. Dont even let me tell you about how many times my mother had to choke me for ripping off a good white vest and catching a cold because i wanted to stand in front of the fan and scaream

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! YOU NEED IT! AH YEAH YOU NEED ME!".

Knowing the music of Michael jackson lives on gives me comfort. I know that his spirit will forever be with us because he gave us music that transcended cultural and racial barriers. Anytime there is a Michael song on, "It don't matter if you're black or white", all you want to do is dance. THAT to me is what being an artist and entertainer is all about.

"Liberian Girl" is my SONG!

 

So is "Man in the Mirror". I still cry (with no shame) when i listen to it.

Yesterday when I touched down in Boston after a week in Hawaii, the cold and rainy weather was a warm blanket to my sunburnt skin and island-fatigued soul. (The MBTA remained, as ever, the bane of my existence.) Don't get me wrong, Hawaii was AMAZING, but I had begun to tire of summer before I even left for the trip, and saw it as the season's last gasp before the welcome arrival of fall. So to get back to Boston and find it cool -- even chilly!---was perfect.

The temperature is supposed to rocket back up to sweltering by the weekend, so this seems an apt time to discuss fall and how much I love it and how giddily excited I am for it to arrive. Seriously.

Why is fall so amazing? IT JUST IS. Sweaters (really long sleeved garments of all varieties), jackets, corduroys (like jeans but more fun to touch), pumpkin products, warm liquids of all kinds (tea, coffee, soup), the beauty of the changing leaves, the crisp feeling in the air, plaid, flannel, blankets, the return of episodic television, and a general back-to-school feeling that I love despite having graduated years ago. Shoes that aren't open-toed! Have I mentioned sweaters? Cause I really love sweaters. And I can wear scarves again without looking like an ass! No more sweating all the time! I COULD GO ON.

Really, y'all, I love fall. Full disclosure: wearing a hoodie right now.

But one of the things that makes the prospect of this upcoming fall so delectable is the many, many bands that are coming to Boston. This summer's had a few good shows (Robyn, The New Pornographers) but this fall is over-fucking-run with live musical goodness. And, really, the cooler weather makes the prospect of cramming yourself into a small, dark space with lots of other people far more inviting, doesn't it?

So, without further ado, the list!

Scissor Sisters, House of Blues
August 28

This is less a fall concert and more like the true last gasp of summer, and I can't think of a band I'd rather get sweaty and gross with one last time that the Scissor Sisters. It's a band even my mother loves (though, thank god, she's never bothered to google what their name really means -- she thinks it's just a funny name! Cause they're funny guys!), and much like the Robyn/Kelis concert, I imagine it will be a bunch of extremely happy queers dancing their asses off. (Can't say the second part of the sentence really followed upon the first, but, ah well.)

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin/Telekinesis, TT The Bear's
September 7

I really don't know anything about SSLYBY, but I've heard their name bandied about by people whose tastes I typically trust, and Telekinesis is one of those poppy indie bands I just love (I keep discovering gems on their self-titled debut album, but my favorite is probably "Awkward Kisser"), it costs $12 and TT The Bear's is five minutes from my apartment, so I am there.

This New York-based dream pop trio's latest album, Disconnect From Desire, is just beautiful. And, once again, the venue is steps from my apartment. I love you, Central Square.

Laura Veirs/The Watson Twins, TT The Bear's
September 15

Not 100 percent sure about this one. Louisville natives The Watson Twins sang back up for Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis on her first solo release, Rabbit Fur Coat, and their harmonies were certainly missed on Lewis's follow up, Acid Tongue. That said, I'm unfamiliar with their solo work, and only know of Veirs via my pseudo-hippie roommate from Ohio, which is not exactly a recommendation. But! We shall see.

Superchunk, The Royale
September 21

Superchunk, one of the many musical projects of Merge Records founder Mac McCaughan (along with co-founder Laura Ballance), was one of the more influential bands of the early indie rock era (oh, the 90s) and very prominent in the Chapel Hill music scene of that time. Punk-influenced and DIY, Superchunk is perhaps most famous for its early single "Slack Motherfucker," though it has released nine albums to date, including the latest, Majesty Shredding. They don't tour much anymore, so I bought a ticket even though I don't know their catalogue that well. Versus, another vintageish band that doesn't tour often, is opening. Now, if McCaughan will only get back on the road with his other band, Portastatic.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM!!!!!!, The Orpheum
September 28

I was so disappointed in the spring when none of LCD Soundsystem's tour dates included Boston. New York got three shows, and we got none!  But! It seems we do get a stop on the second round of dates, and while I think it's a terrible venue for the band, I still bought two tickets as soon as I could (which, sadly, was the day after they went on sale, and thus I and my as-yet-undetermined guest are in the center balcony).  James Murphy keeps threatening to stop recording, and he hates touring anyway, so I need to get my fix while the fix is available. Sleigh Bells is opening, and I could not care less.

Ra Ra Riot, The Royale
October 1

Once again, a terrible fit between band and venue (I've only seen one show at the Royale, the free Passion Pit show, and I HATED it, and don't see why anyone thought a gay dance club could also double as an inviting space for indie bands), but Ra Ra Riot plays haunting and beautiful chamber pop (which, I'm sure will go over super well in the slick and cheesy environs of the Royale) and I will seek it out wherever I can. And, on the plus side, the Royale has couches no one ever uses because they all seem to think that the MUST crowd into the tiny little dancefloor space in front of the stage. Their debut album, The Rhumb Line, was one of my most-played albums of late-2008/most of 2009, and "Can You Tell" is one of the better contemporary examples of the catchy unrequitedish love ballad.

The Hold Steady, The Royale
October 6

Yet another travesty at the Royale, and not one I'm sure I want to witness, but I did realize a bit earlier this year that I do genuinely like The Hold Steady. I had been turned off earlier not by their music, but by the critical treatment of their music, which was, "Oh, great, finally a band that plays REAL rock music" unlike all this other crap with synthesizers and bass lines (how gay!). If I heard one more Springsteen comparison (and long live Springsteen, don't get me wrong) or a mention of them being a "bar band" or any other such real man band posturing, I was gonna hit someone. The Hold Steady became for me the epitome of Dudes With Manly Feelings music, and I wanted no part of it. I finally got over that, but I'm still not sure I want to see them live.

Fountains of Wayne, Paradise Rock Club
October 8

Fountains of Wayne, best known for their novelty hit "Stacy's Mom," have been churning out clever (if a little cheesy) pop music for years now. Adam Schlesinger, their songwriter and primary creative force, has also written half of the good fake pop songs of the past decade plus (the title song to That Thing You Do! and "Pop! Goes My Heart" from the far-more-terrible-than-it-should-have-been Music And Lyrics), and their show should be more fun than most.

Paul F. Tompkins, The Brattle Theatre

Okay, not a concert but an awesome live event nonetheless! Best known as host of Vh1's Best Week Ever (along with a handful of film appearances) Paul F. Tompkins is probably my favorite of the alternative comedians. (Patton Oswalt and Maria Bamford are close behind.) He's also started a campaign where, if he can find 300 people who pledge to come to a show in their city, he...comes to their city. It took a long while (and included an awkward little Twitter spat with the management of the Brattle, who weren't terribly responsive at first), but he's on his way. I'd love to find a YouTube clip of one of my favorite bits off his album, Impersonal, but it seems Paul is on the ball with protecting copyrighted material.

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, TT The Bear's
October 13

Their music sounds exactly like their name, and it can get a bit old after a bit, but this is supposedly their LAST TOUR EVER before they become officially defunct, and they don't seem the type to do such a thing for the attention. They mean business.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Paradise Rock Club
October 20

Another tragically named band, TPOBPAH are nonetheless a catchy punk-influenced pop band, and one that would no doubt be fun to watch.

Florence + The Machine, House of Blues
October 31

I've already seen Florence & The (Not Miami Sound) Machine once this year, on a tiny North American tour she did in April. It was, hands down, one of the best shows I've seen this year, or ever. She's got an amazing stage presence and works the crowd remarkably well (people were, like, jumping cause she told them to). She's only got one album thus far, and can play pretty much every song on it without overstaying her welcome. Her first show was at the Paradise, a better venue in my opinion (it offers more surfaces to lean on, which I appreciate), and the HoB is hopelessly cheesy, but, seriously, if she isn't huge by next year, I'll be amazed. The choice of the day after Halloween Saturday is, um, lamentable.

I Love Sensation Fashion Show 08.07.2010 
After a day of shopping, some purchases at BCBG, and a few hours at two different cafes, I stopped by  Festival Mode and Design during my stay in Montreal last weekend with a few friends. The Festival Mode and Design is an annual event that showcases local Quebecois work. I attended the I love Sensation closing show "by NYC 'design guru' Dick Walsh featuring surprise guests" (FMDM).

The show was wild! Music blasted through the streets, sending vibrations through the crowd as models carried coloured mannequins down the runway, placing them in carefully chosen spots lining the runway. Throughout the show, models carried decorations creating a small set around each and every mannequin. Every now and then rows of models strut down the catwalk covered in a bright, opaque material tightly pulled over their entire frame.

Granted, it was more a show than a showcase of fashion, but fun to watch nonetheless. I believe I was looking forward to a different aesthetic. Perhaps because local and budding designers are closer to, oh let's say us little people down here, you'd think you'd have more variety of size and race on the runway rather than the regular waif. Then again, perhaps it's just my obsession with Marc Jacobs for LV this fall talking.

I had a birthday last week. I would have told you about it had The Great Timesuck of 2010 (i.e. kids' consignment sale) not devoured the last two weeks of my existence. But it did and here we are, a week later and another week older.

The occasion, as birthdays tend to do, got me thinking.

My daughter is three, or as she still calls it, free. And while she acts exactly like a three year old a large chunk of the day (read: wall-climbing, back-talking, foot-stomping fun), there are times - many of them -when her actions seem more like a girl who is six, or thirteen, or thirty. Sometimes the things that come out of that pretty mouth are so profound they have me reeling a day later. Case in point, a week or so ago she referred to her best bud Peyton as "my whooooole life friend" (complete with dramatic hand gesture). I thought this over for a good twelve hours and decided that yes, this is pretty much the most beautiful thing one friend can say about another.

My boys, they have only been on this earth for nine months, yet I feel so intimately connected to them that I honestly can't imagine this home without them in it. And I can already see it - they are old souls, like their sister. Look into those bluer-than-blue eyes and you'll swear they know life's grandest secret.

Then there's the Hub. We are separated in age by nearly eight years, but no matter. Although most of our lives we didn't know each other, in countless ways it seems we always have. It seems he has always been there, inserted into my memory like an apparition come to life.

And me. Well. I apparently don't know how old I am because I said on this very blog not long ago that I had not been a fan of turning 32. Funny I should say that since I wasn't actually 32. That's right. I aged myself. Unknowingly. FOR MONTHS. Let this serve as proof of how completely removed from reality I am a majority of the time. Anything current, relevant, political, cultural, social... If the prerequisite is that one must be paying attention to anything other than oneself (or one's attachments, ahemsmallchildrencough), then you can safely bet your mini-van fund that I'm a little slow. To say the least.

You don't have a mini-van fund? Obviously you need to reconsider.

As for the birthday, it was a truly great day. Come to think of it, I can safely say it was the best birthday I've ever had, given that it is my first in this family of five. Being crawled all over by my identical cuddle monsters and awarded hourly with a cheery "Happy Birthday, Mama!" from the Girl of Free? Yes please.

My parents were here, which is some happy all by itself. But it also afforded me the opportunity to do the unthinkable. Leave the house. TWO DAYS IN A ROW. We're talkin' hair cut (the first in over six months, mind you), trip to the bookstore, pedicure with new book in hand, lunch with friends, then back for a manicure. (Didn't want those upper digits to be slighted. It was only fair.)

Oh, and I awoke (at 8AM, not 5AM, praise be to the almighty) to this.

And this.

Which means less of THIS (me wanting to go all Office Space on our laptop).

If you think all this makes my husband the most selfless and thoughtful individual on the planet, I will certainly not argue with you. He's ridiculous.

But if you think a day can't get any better than all of the above followed by margaritas with that ridiculous individual, you'd be wrong.

Meet Finnegan Wayne, my tiny nephew and my new birthday buddy. The best birthday gift an adoring aunt could ever receive. Obviously.

Call me crazy, people, but any birthday where a shiny new toy (with accessories) is not the highlight... that is a very, very good day.

Victoria Beckham has a beautiful body but sometimes she becomes too skinny, her book "That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything in Between" is absolutely fabulous.

In the movie Eat, Pray, Love they talk about muffin tops and how women feel guilty about them even when they are small.  I remember when I was 105 pounds in high school, I use to eat like a cat because I wanted to have a body like Kate Moss, I am small in stature 5 3" so there is no way I could ever have her body.  My prom took place in 1995 and I recall this as the year of my starvation diet, trying to hold  onto a size four and five was no easy fit.  I know feel that size eight suits me better and I still have to exercise a lot to maintain myself that way but at least I get to eat dessert once in a while.

So what is a muffin top?

Photoshop can make people look amazing and hide their imperfections.  Look at this Britney Spears add http://celebrities.ninemsn.com.au/blog.aspx?blogentryid=633229&showcomments=true which was recently use for Kohls  and see how they made it look better.  All magazines use this technique so when you look at someone in the front cover you are looking at something that has been touched up to look flawless.

MNS Chief Raj Thackeray has a terrific sense of humour. Whenever he is asked to speak at functions, he makes spontaneous remarks to create laughter among the audience. On the occasion of Music and website release function of the Marathi horror film ‘Sa ..Sasucha’, the charismatic leader while appreciating the efforts of the film maker Kishore Belekar, asked him if he needed any help from him. “ I can help you a lot with my own experience with horror films. My own film is treated sometimes by critics, as horror film,” he remarked with a pause; allowing the jam packed elite audience to burst into laughter. Obviously, he was referring to his recent ‘Khall and Phataak’ remarks and aftereffects.

While boosting the confidence of Marathi film makers, he stated, “ You focus on internal matters of the film and we will look into the external requirements. I will certainly look into your grievances with the Multiplexes.” Referring to the meeting he had planned with the Producers of Marathi films the next day, he appealed to all those and artistes to come forward openly with their issues. “ Don’t cry, be bold and address your issues. I will not ask for any favour in return. Don’t be scared that in future I may ask you to join my party’s election campaign or meetings etc.. All I can assure you that I am playing no politics with this issue. It’s my genuine effort to sort out your problems,” he remarked categorically. At the same time he appealed to Marathi film lovers to go and watch Marathi films at Multiplexes “I assure you that henceforth they will have to screen Marathi films during prime time. Now, it all depends on your response.”

Kishore Belekar, who is directing this film, thanked his producers Harish and Sunita Patil, Nupur Rathod besides thanking Sameer Dixit who is distributing the film and Videocon Group, who are presenting this film. Among those present on the occasion were Yatin karyekar, lead actress of the film- Sonali Kulkarni, Bharati Achrekar, Satish Pulekar, Lyricist & music director Sandeep Khare and young Music directors Viraj and Ankur, who have provided the background music for this film.

‘Sa..Sasucha, is a thriller which revolves around a woman and her deceased mother-in-law. It’s an unusual story about the quest of this woman who longs to find answers to the strange incidents that she experiences in the new house after marriage.The film is full of special and terrific sound effects, as experienced after watching the trailor of the film. While speaking to Media persons after the function, Director Kishore Belekar spoke about some of the issues during film's promotion. "In some theatres, they were hesitant to show the trailor of my film, even against payment, which is strange". Starring Sunil Barve, Sonali Kulkarni, Vinay Apte, Shubhangi Gokhale, Yatin Karyekar, Kamlesh Sawant, Omkar Karve, Vimal Mhatre, arun Bhadsavle, Rajesh Bhosale, Anita Ninave and k. Vrushali, the film is due for release on 27th August 2010.

 There was a knock on the door. It was Buckley. He was solemn, with puffy eyes and a sadness that emanated from his soul. “Hey man. How are you doing?” His voice quavered slightly. Gabriel last saw him a few days ago. He invited him in and they walked down the hall to Gabe’s room. He knew something was wrong, that it had been too long since he and Buckley had talked seriously, and that a random knock on his door occasioned more than a catch up. They sat down, Buckley on the bed, Gabriel in his Captain’s chair, at his desk. “I have a confession to make man.”
“You've been doing H intravenously?”
“I do heroin.” This didn’t come as a shock to Gabriel; he had supposed that his friend was caught up with the "H train" for a while. “ I've done it for a long time, and I haven't told you but you're the one person I can trust and talk to outside of my junkie friends. I did it back then, I did it all this year, I still do it.”
“Shit man.” He knew that to lecture his friend immediately would be inappropriate, that the reason he came to him in the first place was because he wouldn’t come down hard on him, but would want to hear his side of the story first. "What's it like?” He was curious, but he also wanted Buckley to be able to get all of the details off of his chest.
“Honestly it's not even that good. The first time, I went over to this guy's house, and he's been doing it for two years or so, and my best friend at school man, he has thick veins, he can carry that shit deep in his veins, but me, mine are thin, so this dude tied up my arm, and when he finally found the one that everyone shoots in, he said, “I found that motherfucker, and now I'm gonna pop it!” And he put that needle in and it spread through my body for like 30 seconds, and I passed out man. I practically passed out for three hours. It’s that fuckin intense. I woke up the other morning feeling like shit like you do some days, and I wanted to tie up. And when I tried to find my vein, because I have thin veins, and I couldn't find it, I was poking and poking, (he made a motion like he was jackhammering one handed with a sewing needle) and I must have pricked 20 or 30 times, and it was a fucking bloodbath man. It was ugly.” Jack's face was sharp and pinned. He looked down the entire time, but felt lighter with each word. He balanced against the history of their friendship like a cane.
The while, Gabriel listened like a shrink, nodding approvingly, thinking about his poor friend, his expectations for his success being washed down the drain by a drug. Buckley looked down at his hands, then up from behind his thick cocoa framed glasses, and wanted to express the pain of his past year and a half.

Seventy-five years after winning her first Lindy-Hop dance contest at the Apollo Theatre, Norma Miller returns to the Apollo main stage at the age of 90 in grand style. Sunday Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., Norma Introduces two premiere screenings of QUEEN OF SWING—a documentary from Emmy-Award
winning director John Biffar, narrated by co-producer and veteran actor Bill Cobbs, both of whom will be present at the event along with some greats from the Jazz World.

Fifteen years in the making, QUEEN OF SWING captures personal stories of how Norma broke down the walls of segregation as only she could. “If you ain’t got a horse you ride a cow” a motto she first heard from her mother that became her anthem. We also meet Norma’s Legendary friends in the Jazz world, Ellington, Armstrong, Basie, Bill Cosby and Redd Foxx are but a few of the numerous greats that help to weave this tale of a true American Pioneer.

Last year's Collegiate Team competition will be back along with a reconstituted Junior Swing Division. If you know juniors or tap dancers please pass this info on to them.
